Nimbin – Australia’s alternative lifestyle capital.

Location:  766 km north of Sydney via the Pacific Highway – 70km from Byron Bay

Prior to 1973, Nimbin was a sleepy little town in the Byron hinterland, servicing the families of the dairy farmers and timber workers of the region.    This all changed in ’73 when Nimbin hosted the Aquarius festival and thousands of students, hippies and those seeking an alternative lifestyle descended on the town.   After the festival was over, many people remained, hoping to live the dreams and ideology of Aquarius and making Nimbin world famous as Australia’s hippie and alternative lifestyle capital.    (I’m sure I came across a few of the original Aquarius festival goers today.)

The main street is full of cafes, interesting shops and even more interesting characters. (I’m not referring to myself).

To be honest, the town is very touristy these days but we returned, not for the town, but for the surrounding countryside which is obviously the reason for the original hippie migration.   It is SO beautiful:  green rolling hills & fields, ancient rock formations, stunning forests and all coloured in the most vibrant green possible.

Who wouldn’t want to live in those hills?

On our way home we stopped off at the Channon Butterfactory Tavern for a coffee/beer.   DSC_0269

This quaint 20th Century tavern, halfway between Nimbin and Lismore, began life as a butter factory.  Once the factory closed it fell into disrepair.   (There are many historic photos inside the tavern).   In 1991 it was renovated and now offers travellers food and beverages in a picturesque rural setting.

Driving back to Byron we were treated to a stunning sunset over the Tweed Ranges and farmland.

Ah Nimbin.   Thanks for a lovely day.

Annie x
